Art Director (Concept and Text)

stodtDinosaur – Universally interested

Jürgen, Concept Developer and Art Director.

One of our cast of humanists. A linguist by trade, he is now in charge of ideas at stodt. Find out in the interview why he is good at it, how he does it, and why boredom can be a good thing sometimes.

Warm-up question for getting started:

What’s your name?

Jürgen

Titles, titles, titles:

What is your job title?

Art Director (Concept and Text)

Master, Dipl.-Ing. or Dr. med.:

What is your educational title, meaning what did you actually study?

I am a linguist. Magister Artium, meaning Master of Arts. In my case that’s master of language(s). From sound to word to sentence and back again. And why communication succeeds most of the time, but sometimes fails.

What everyone has always wanted to know:

What do you do at stodt?

Having ideas.

Look behind the scenes:

What can you do and why?

Let me put it this way: Since the days of Goethe, there haven’t been many universal scholars. And since I’m not smart enough to be one, I am more universally interested. That makes having a broad base, taking everything in and then translating it into creativity not all that difficult.

Experience is a good thing, too:

How long have you been with stodt?

Since June 2007. One of the stodtDinosaurs.

Customers, machines, pixels, a warm office or coffee:

Why are you passionate about your job?

One of the greats in my field, the copywriter David Ogilvy, once said: “You cannot bore somebody into buying.” That says it perfectly. Every day, I have the chance to work with my colleagues to make up things that, if all goes well, are not boring.

Be honest, but not so honest we have to censor your answer:

What gets on your nerves sometimes?

Well, sure, sometimes even my job is dull. But boredom is important for developing new ideas. I think I’m arguing in circles now.
